Women and Heart Attacks
Filed in archive Heart and Stroke on February 21, 2007
Medical professionals may misdiagnose a woman's heart attack. Women have a whole new set of symptoms. Men are stricken by chest pains, and pains that shoot down their ams. Women, on the other hand, have symptoms that might be mistaken for stress or a panic attack.
An article that appeared in Newswise states:
More subtle symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, nausea or vomiting and back and jaw pain are more likely in women
One woman who went through this tells her story. Dr.Helen says:
It was an awful feeling--I felt like I was smothering to death and going to pass out. My husband called 911 and was told to get me to the nearest hospital which he did.
Despite the fact that I was short of breath and shaking like a leaf, the doctor decided I was allergic to something in the gym and gave me a shot of benadryl. Actually, I later learned that shortness of breath and a sense of impending doom or death were signs (especially in women) of heart problems.
Do yourself a favor. Learn the symptoms of a heart attack for both men and women. Be ready to recognize a heart attack whether it's happening to you or someone else.

You are very right in this post - heart attack in women is a terrible experience. And the worse part is that women still don't recognize heart attacks as being a risk for them and they consider it as a "man's disease" which is incorrect as AHA shows in their studies.
I also am interested in solving some cardiovascular problems and I wrote about heart attack in women at http://www.allheartattack.com/prevention/heart-attack-women.php
Hope this helps a little

Nanette Wenger, M.D., a professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at the Emory University School of Medicine and chief of Cardiology at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, will answer questions about women and heart disease with a focus on the role of cholesterol in heart disease and current cholesterol screening guidelines. February is American Heart Month. Wenger is board chair of the Society for Women’s Health Research, which conducted a survey last summer that indicates a disconnect between women understanding the risks associated with high cholesterol and taking action to monitor and control it.
