Trinidad, Colorado: gender reassignment capitol of the world
Trinidad, Colorado is otherwise known as the gender reassignment capital of the world. Thousands of gender reassignment surgeries have taken place there, and now, it is becoming known for a different type of surgery.
Women victims of Female Genital Mutilation are having reconstructive surgery at the gender reassignment centre at Mt. San Rafael Hospital. The doctor who performs the operations, for free, had her own gender reassignment surgery many years ago and says she understands what her patients are feeling.
Typically, patients have not had the entire clitoris removed, Bowers said, and the surgery exposes what remains, uses remaining tissue to reconstruct labia that may have been cut away, and clears scar tissue
Women arrive from all over the world in the hopes of undergoing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery to right the horrible mutilations suffered when they were young girls. The mutilations are typically carried out in the local village with hand made tools.

I recently saw the documentary Trinidad and felt I learned a ton about not only the town, but the entire issue of reassignment surgery. As well as the impact of the issue on families and relationships. I highly recommend it.

I think that the gender reassignment surgery is fascinating, how they can turn a man into a woman and the other way around. But I truly believe that in the future there will be no genre anymore…
