How does it work? The Feminist Women's Health Center explains:
Pregnancy can be prevented after intercourse by taking Emergency Contraceptive pills (EC). It works by giving the body a short, high, burst of synthetic hormones. This disrupts hormone patterns needed for pregnancy. EC disturbs the ovaries and the development of the uterine lining, making pregnancy less likely. EC is used within 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse. It is most effective within the first 24 hours. Emergency Contraception reduces the risk of pregnancy by 75%. EC does not protect against reproductive tract infections, including HIV/AIDS.
Now here's where the controversy comes in. If you're taking the pill after intercourse, then you are already pregnant, so wouldn't this be, when it comes right down to it, abortion?
According to Action News out of Memphis, some doctors and pharmacists consider it just that, and are calling it evil:
Planned Parenthood says sometimes women have trouble getting a prescription for Plan B filled. Petrone says one of the reasons is that some drug stores don't sell it.
"As a pharmacist I have my option - my option is not to get involved and that's on a religious basis," said pharmacist Champion. "The Bible says - least I think it says shun the very appearance of evil! Why should I get involved in it?"
Planned Parenthood's view:
Nearly a year and a half after FDA advisory committees first recommended over-the-counter status for EC, anti-choice pressure and ideological politics are still preventing women from accessing this vital tool in the fight against unintended pregnancy. The recent spate of pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control, including emergency contraception, for personal ideological reasons only underlines the importance of making EC available over the counter.

Substitute any location for Memphis. I think the trend is wide spread, at least in the US and Canada. Probably in other countries as well.

Well, it can be very controversial. Is there really a live fetus if there is no developed heartbeat yet? Some people don't have any problem agreeing to the day after pill if it can help prevent pregnancy, especially with a young child that hasn't yet experienced life long enough to understand what being a parent is.
