Mushrooms to Prevent Breast Cancer

Looking for a way to reduce the risk of breast cancer? Dr. Weil suggests mushrooms:

There are many ways to help lower your risk of breast cancer; one is to incorporate medicinal mushrooms into your diet and health regime.

He suggests four varieties of mushroom:

  • Maitake – An article in Find Articles has this to say about the Maitake mushroom:
    Maitake:
this Japanese mushroom may protect you from cancer and cut your cholesterol levels. It may also enhance the immunity of HIV patients

  • Shiitake – Wikipedia tells us that:

Shiitake mushrooms have been researched for their medicinal benefits, most notably their anti-tumor properties in laboratory mice.

Agaricus – This from Agaricus Power:

Agaricus has been a big hit in the past few years with its recognition as an alternative treatment support for many diseases including Cancer.

  • Reishi – The B.C. Cancer Agency has this to say baout the reshi mushroom:

"…reishi may be useful in the form of a supplement during radiotherapy or chemotherapy to reduce various side effects, among them, bone marrow suppression and fatigue. Indeed, the immunorestorative activity of reishi may afford a degree of protection from the side effects of radiotherapy." (Jones Aug 1998)

  1. The Mushroom Lady Says:

Great Information. There is currently a study being conducted City of Hope, they report finding anti-aromatase properties in mushrooms, or in other words the chemical that can help prevent breast cancer. All varieties, Portabella, shiitake, crimini, oyster, enoki, chanterelles, and small and large white mushrooms were all tested. The large white mushrooms emerged as the most effective and potent inhibitor of aromatase activity, even when cooked.
Although more studies are needed to substantiate this evidence, the future of breast cancer reduction using mushrooms does look very promising.
