Menopause and Weight Gain
Filed in archive Menopause on March 5, 2007
For many women, menopause leads to weight gain. It did for me. After being a real skinny Minny for most of my life, I suddenly started to pack on the pounds.
The Better Health Channel explains:
With ageing, muscles decrease in bulk and the metabolism slows down. These changes can contribute to weight gain around the time of menopause. Other physical changes associated with menopause may include:
- Loss of libido
- Vaginal dryness
- Hair growth (or loss).
So what can we do about the weight gain problem? Families.com has these suggestions:
- Participate in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day. Add strength training to increase muscle mass.
- Limit the fat in your diet. Make healthy food choices. Consider your sources for dietary fat.
- Decrease caloric intake.
- Consult a professional. It may help to speak with a doctor, nutritionist, or fitness expert. You may need a regiment that is tailored to address your weight loss needs and lifestyle.
- Find an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on to make it over the hills and through the valleys. It helps to talk about the changes you're experiencing.

- Loss of libido
- Vaginal dryness
- Hair growth (or loss).

As of late, I have been surprising people because I lost too much weight (some 35 lbs!) and they barely recognize me.
