Quoting from an article in Medical News Today:
UCLA associate professor of psychology and lead author of the study, Traci Mann said:
"You can initially lose 5 to 10 percent of your weight on any number of diets, but then the weight comes back."
"We found that the majority of people regained all the weight, plus more," she added.
Health Pages explains why this happens:
Sure, any drop in the number of calories you eat will result in weight loss. But as soon as you go back to your normal eating habits, the pounds will creep--or leap--back on. And depriving yourself of food for long periods of time only makes your body hang on to its precious fat stores more stubbornly. The truth is that permanent weight loss takes time and requires a change in eating and exercise habits.
Trying to lose weight? Avoid those fad diets. In fact, according to the latest news. don't bother with dieting at all. Try sensible eating, portion reduction and exercise instead.

To successfully lose weight, you must carry out
a plan to balance your caloric intake with exercise.
Ideally, dieting should be done by eating a nutritionally
balanced, low-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.
